CLAREMONT, CA -- The Banana Slugs faced a challenge on Saturday as they finished up their Southern California road trip as they took on ITA NCAA Division III #4 Pomona-Pitzer. The match featured three matches that went three sets as the Sagehens squeaked by the Banana Slugs 5-4.
Both teams were coming off victories in their last match. UC Santa Cruz won 6-3 over Pacific University on Thursday in Claremont while the Sagehens won 8-1 over Lewis and Clark College in Pomona yesterday.
As with their match on Thursday, both teams won three matches each. In the #4 singles match, AJ Flora of UC Santa Cruz defeated Josh Kim of Pomona Pitzer 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. In the #2 singles match, Chadwick Stone of the Banana Slugs defeated Jonathan Kim of the Sagehens 6-1, 6-1. The tightest singles match of the day was the #3 singles match between Kyle Richter of UC Santa Cruz and Graham Maassen of Pomona Pitzer. Richter defeated Maassen 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. In the #1 singles match, Connor Hudson of the Sagehens defeated Max Littlejohn of the Banana Slugs 6-2, 7-5. In the #5 singles match, Antony Bello of Pomona Pitzer defeated Chetan Munugala of UC Santa Cruz 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. In the #6 singles match, Sam Malech of the Sagehens defeated James Soper of the Banana Slugs 6-2, 6-4.
The Sagehens won two doubles match and the Banana Slugs won one. In the #3 doubles match, the Banana Slugs' team of Munugala and Adrian Sirovica defeated the Sagehens' team of Bello and Spencer Simonides 8-6. In the #2 doubles match, the Sagehens' team of Kim and Jake Yasgoor defeated the Banana Slugs' team of Derek Levchenko and Stone 8-5. The tightest doubles match was the #1 doubles match between Littlejohn and Richter of UC Santa Cruz and Kalyan Chadalavada and Hudson of Pomona Pitzer. Chadalavada and Hudson defeated Littlejohn and Richter 9-8 (7-4).

The Banana Slugs will have their next match three weeks from today. The Banana Slugs will take on George Fox University on April 18th in Santa Cruz. The first serve is set for 2 pm. The match will serve as Senior Day.
