BELMONT- Notre Dame took advantage of poor shooting and turnovers by the UCSC men's basketball team Saturday night to roll up a 108-75 triumph at Serra High in Belmont. UCSC had a horrendous first half, hitting 10-of-41 field goal attempts for 23 percent to trail Notre Dame by 30 points, 67-37.
"In the second half," UCSC Head Coach Joe Richardson said, "we played well. We shot 60 percent (18-of-30). "Notre Dame beat us by 40 points earlier this season in Sonoma, but again we couldn't compete on the boards. The kids are showing improvement, they're playing very aggressive and showing the ability to score points. It's very encouraging."
Freshman Mike Weaver led UCSC in scoring with 20 points and finished the game with eight rebounds, while Tim Deignan sank 18 and Steve Light sank 15. UCSC, 3-14 on the season, hosts Bethany Bible College tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the East Fieldhouse.
