SANTA CLARA, CA -- UC Santa Cruz started their 2015 season with a match against NCAA Division I opponent Santa Clara University. The Broncos used four straight set victories to beat the Banana Slugs 4-0.
The Banana Slugs finished their 2014 season with a 6-11 record having finished their schedule in the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis National Championship with a 5-1 loss to Claremont Mudd Scripps. The Broncos finished the 2014 season with a 17-7 record and finished their schedule in the West Coast Conference Championship final with a 4-2 loss to University of San Diego.
The Broncos won each singles match. Ashot Khacharyan, the ITA's #122 ranked player in NCAA Division I, defeated Max Littlejohn 6-0, 6-2. Ilya Osintsev defeated Chad Stone 6-1, 6-2 and Mikheil Khmiadashvili defeated Jimmy Soper 6-2, 6-2. Three singles matches were not completed. In the doubles competition, the Broncos won two matches. The Broncos team of Khacharyan and Osintsev defeated the Banana Slugs team of Garrett DeGuchi and Max Littlejohn 6-4. Max Heerinckx and Mike Standifer of Santa Clara defeated Soper and Stone 6-4. One doubles match was not finished.
