CLAREMONT, CA -- The No. 1 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team looked the part in their first match of the NCAA Division III Tennis Championships as they dispatched of U.C. Santa Cruz 5-1 on May 9 in the second round of the NCAAs at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. With the win, CMS improved to 27-1 on the season and will face the winner of the Pomona-Pitzer vs. Texas-Tyler match in the third round on Saturday, May 10 at 2 p.m. PST.
The No. 3 doubles team of Nikolas Marino and Zhenya Pereverzin of CMS got an 8-4 win over Garrett Deguchi and Chetan Munugala to get CMS' first point of the match. Warren Wood and Joe Dorn's 8-3 win in No. 1 doubles over Eli Scandalis and George Goetz pushed CMS' lead to 2-0. Santa Cruz's lone point of the match came in No. 2 doubles as Max Littlejohn and Kyle Richter defeated Skyler Butts and Neel Kotrappa 8-4.
In singles, CMS got three, two-set wins as Wood (6-2, 6-4) in No. 1 singles, Marino (6-0, 6-0) in No. 3 singles and Butts (6-0, 6-2) in No.4 singles all won their respective matches to secure the 5-1 win over Santa Cruz.
