Banana Slugs End Washington Trip with Loss

TACOMA, WA -- Pacific Lutheran University would jump out to a 10-2 lead and would cruise to a 67-46 win over UC Santa Cruz in Tacoma. The game wrapped up a two game trip to the state of Washington for the Banana Slugs. 

UC Santa Cruz was coming off a 65-52 loss to University of Puget Sound on Saturday in Tacoma. The Lutes were off a 72-33 loss to Seattle University at the ShoWare Center in Kent, Washington. 

UC Santa Cruz would score the first basket of the ballgame on an Ilan Zur jumper to make the score 2-0 with 18:59 left in the first half. On the ensuring Lutes possession, Brandon Lester gave the Lutes the lead for good with a three pointer to make the score 3-2 with 18:47 left in the half. The Lutes would get out to a 10-2 lead after a Jourdan Johnson three pointer with 16:09 left in the first half. Terrell Williams would give the Lutes a double digit lead, at 16-6, on a layup with 12:50 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would get as close as eight, at 16-8, after two Corey Cilia free throws with 10:50 left. The Lutes would then go on an 18-4 run, capped by two Seth Anderson free throws, to make the score 34-12 with 2:49 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would add four free throws, two by Jared Ponce and James Townsend, to cut the Lutes' lead to 34-16 at the halftime intermission. 

In the second half, both teams would not score in the first three minutes and forty three seconds of clock time. The Lutes would expand on their sizable halftime lead. The closest that the Banana Slugs would come was twenty, with 16:17 left in the game, at 36-16. The Lutes' largest lead came with three minutes left at thirty two, at 67-35, on an Austen Wilson layup. The Slugs would then go on an 11-0 game ending run, capped by a Ilan Zur three pointer with seventeen seconds left, to make the score 67-46. Kyle Sawtell would miss a three pointer with eight seconds left for the Lutes and the final score was 67-46 in favor of Pacific Lutheran. 

James Townsend had ten points for the Banana Slugs. Seth Anderson had a game high nineteen points off the bench for the Loggers. Corey Cilia, off the bench, and Ilan Zur had seven points for the Banana Slugs in the loss. Zacharias Wallin, off the bench, had nine points for the Lutes.

The Banana Slugs shot 29.8% (14-47) from the field, 26.1% (6-23) from the three point line and was 60% (12-20) from the free throw line. The Lutes shot 45% (27-60) from the field, 42.9% (6-14) from the three point line and 70% (7-10) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced thirteen Lutes turnovers scoring four points off the turnovers while the Lutes' defense forced eighteen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring twenty one points off the turnovers. Pacific Lutheran outrebounded UC Santa Cruz 39-34 but the Banana Slugs had one more steal (10-9) than did the Lutes.

The next game for the Banana Slugs will be Friday as they take on California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
