Box Score CLAREMONT, CA -- Sophomore guard Jared Ponce had 29 points on 10-17 shooting, but UC Santa Cruz fell to Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team, 89-83. Even with a late run by the Slugs, it just wasn't enough to win at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Senior guard
Spencer Wells added 22 points and was 10-12 at the free throw line for the Slugs, yet the Slugs fall to 3-16. Pomona Pitzer was lead by junior guard Kyle McAndrews, with 27 points and perfect from the three-point line.
UC Santa Cruz kept the game closes in the first half (35-32). The Slugs went on a 7-0 run to pull within 73-63 with7:09 to go. As the game went on it seemed like it was a shooting contest between the Saghens guard, Kyle McAndrews and the Slugs guard,
Jared Ponce. Another 7-0 run brought the Slugs within 85-81 with 1:13 left, after
Ilan Zur made a clutch three-pointer. Pomona melted the clock down, enough for them to get the win.
This game was
Jared Ponce's best game of the season. Along with his 29 points, he shot 75% at the Free throw line and had 4 assists. Freshmen guard
Tyler Berkness scored 10 points off the bench and was perfect on his three-point and free throw attempts.
