Box Score Brent Jacobs moves up to second on All Time Rebound list as Slugs defeat Red Hawks. With five players in double figures, UC Santa Cruz rolled to an 86-77 victory over Simpson University. Playing at the Heritage Student Life Center in Redding, the Slugs ran their record to 8-8 for the season. Early on, the Red Hawks of Simpson moved out to a 5-0 lead before Tyler Hunt opened Santa Cruz's scoring with a deep three just over one minute into the game. Over the next four minutes, the Slugs stayed close until two free throws by Hunt gave Santa Cruz their first lead of the game, 8-7. Stepping up to the challenge, the host Red Hawks responded with a 13-5 run to take their largest lead of the game, 20-13 with 8:46 left in the first half. The Slugs countered with a 15-4 run of their own, capped by a steal and a dunk by Brent Jacobs to take their biggest lead of the first half, 28-24 with just over 4 minutes left in the half. In a game of runs, the Red Hawks once again responded with a 12-4 run of their own before another Jacobs basket off of a Spencer Wells assist cut the halftime lead to 38-34 for Simpson at halftime. Simpson opened the second half by immediately by Nick Darby hitting a three to expand the Red Hawk lead to seven. With two baskets in the paint by Brent Jacobs and another deep three from Tyler Hunt, the Slugs tied the game four minutes into the second half. Three minutes later, a Spencer Wells jumper off a Nathan Morhi assist gave the Slugs the lead for good. This lead eventually expanded to 15 points off of a Tyler Hunt lay up with 2:50 left in the game. With the Slug starters on the bench, the Red Hawks resorted to fouls in an effort to get back into the game. Over the latter portion of the game, Nick Wagner was a perfect four for four from the line and freshman Marshall Arnwine made three free throws to help secure the victory. Combined, both teams shot 22 free throws over the foul plagued last 2:28 of the game. Nick Wagner’s last two with 16 seconds left in the game concluded the scoring, giving the Slugs their eighth victory of the season, 83-77. Bombing from outside, Nick Dalby of Simpson was the leading scorer in the game with 24 points including four threes. Stephon Thomas of the Red Hawks was the game's leading rebounder with 12 including four offensive rebounds. Tyler Hunt's 18 points led the Slugs. Brent Jacobs (13), Spencer Wells (13), Sam Allen (12) and Jamien Jones (11) joined Tyler in double figures. Jamien Jones 11 rebounds led Santa Cruz on the boards and Brent Jacobs’ seven rebounds moved him to second all time on the Slugs career rebound list. Spencer Wells had a career high four steals while Nathan Morhi and Trent Reeves both had four assists for Santa Cruz. The next game for the Slugs is scheduled for Monday, January 16 at Holy Names in Oakland. There, for the first time since January 26, 1997, the Slugs have the opportunity to be more wins than losses this late in the season. Holy Names is coming off a two game winning streak, crushing William Jessup 84-38 and beating Notre Dame 80-62.
