Slugs Can't Slime Past Penguins

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- In their home opener, the Slugs dropped their second game of the year to Dominican University, 55-60. The Slugs were in foul trouble early in the first half, and Dominican had a comfortable 11-point, 32-21, lead going into the locker room. UCSC was able to cut Dominican's lead to just 3 points behind Senior Jenna Chabot's 16 second half points. But it wasn't enough as the Penguins knocked down all their free throws late in the game to come out with the 4-point victory.

Dominican's Olivia Williams recorded a double-double and led all scorers with 25 points along with 10 rebounds. Williams shot 8 for 12 from the field and 9 for 11 from behind the line.

Jenna Chabot led the Slugs with 21 points, shooting 7 for 14 from the field, to go along with 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. With her five 3 pointers, Chabot now shares the UCSC record for most 3 pointers made in a game.

Senior Rachel Ocampo had another great all-around night with 9 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. And Junior Sarah Defenbaugh added 7 points and 3 rebounds.

UCSC's freshmen came off the bench to score their first points in a Slug uniform; Kayleigh Calandri had 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 block; and Caitlin Miller had 2 points and 1 rebound.

The Slugs travel down to Southern California this weekend to participate in the David Wells Classic against Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
