UCSC Men Notch Win On Court

SAN JOSE - "It was kind of nice." explained UCSC Men's Basketball Coach Joe Richardson after chalking up his "first" victory of the season Thursday night. UCSC. behind the scoring of Mike Weaver Tim Deignan Rick Condit and Terrance Etter, overpowered San Jose Bible. 84-64. Although UCSC officially owns a 2-8 overall record, Thursday night's triumph was the first win on the court.
UCSC did earn a victory in its first outing of the season, but it was by forfeit when it was revealed Chapman played the game with an ineligible player.
"We played two strong halves of basketball and that's encouraging," Richardson said. "It's nice to play a real team game. The players enjoyed it a lot more, and I certainly did too."
UCSC went into the game having lost eight straight and afterwards the coach admitted the "kids were really, happy. Eric Simpson (a junior) said that was the first game he'd ever won.
"The team has remained real positive despite all of the adversity," Richardson explained.
The double-figure scoring of Weaver (19), Deignan (17), Condit 16) and Etter (11) provided the margin of victory for UCSC.
By half-time, UCSC had built up a 38-26 edge. UCSC shot 53 percent, hitting 39 of 74, while outrebounding San Jose Bible 37-25.
"This was our first game we played somebody our same size. We were still a younger team, but we just outquicked them," the coach added.
UCSC returns to action tonight at 5 p.m. against Menlo at the campus' West Fieldhouse. Saturday night UCSC hosts the Cal Basketball Club, again at 5 o'clock.
