SACRAMENTO - For 27 minutes, the NCAA Division III Sea Lions were giving a real battle to the heavily favored Division II Hornets, who had eight players over 6-foot-6 and 12 scholarship players. But, then, the Sea Lions were so tired, they sank lower than sea level.
"I was proud of our guys. We could have beaten them if we hadn't run out of gas," said UCSC Coach Mark Henry.
"We were behind by only five points with 13 minutes to go when our center, Sandro Meallet, fouled out and we needed all the height we could get to challenge them."
John Saintignon of UCSC led all scorers with 24 points, 19 of them in the first half, while Tom Martin sparked the Hornets with 20 points. Sacramento used everyone on its roster, with no one playing more than 23 minutes.
