To coach UCSC Sea Lions men's basketball team, it may be best to wear a hat, with the brim pulled right down to the eyebrows, so as not to get one wo many peeks at the scoreboard.
If a coach does catch a glance now and then, the hat will also prevent him from pulling his hair out.
Mark Henry, current UCSC coach, doesn't wear a hat, so it's the game-to-game improvement of his often-outmanned squad that counts not wins or losses.
That's good, because the Sea Lions lost again Saturday 79-37 to visiting Cal"State Stanislaus
Saturday's loss had Henry talking about "what ifs" and "if we would haves" long afterward. The Sea Lions shot an abominable 30 percent from the field in the first half to fall behind 38-19. "If we would have shot 50 percent, that would have been 10 more first half points. Then we go into halftime down by nine points instead of 19, and we have a chance," Henry said. The poor shooting continued as UCSC finished the night shooting 31 percent (17 of 54).
"What can you do?," Henry said. "You can never win with shooting like that. "Our game plan was all right," he continued. "We just couldn't shoot. Our offense was pathetic. We weren't as patient as I had hoped." A bloodied John Saintignon led the scoring for UCSC with 19, in what Henry called his toughest shooting game all year. The Sea Lions were manhandled on the boards, falling on the short end of the rebounding totals, 49-25.
