Karl Collins, a former No. 1-ranked scholastic tennis player in Northern California, makes his return to the Bay Area to serve as an assistant coach with the UC Santa Cruz women’s tennis program in 2026-27.
Collins spent last spring as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, his alma mater, where he assisted in on-court coaching, player development and match preparation, helping the Rainbow Warriors to a six-win improvement.
In 2019, Collins ranked as the No. 1 player in the USTA NorCal 18’s Division while attending Vista High School in Richmond, California. He was the two-time CIF North Coast Section singles champion, and was undefeated against high school competition in his two years with Vista, ranking as high as No. 54 in the nation.
During his playing career at the Division I level, Collins earned All-Big West accolades in doubles at Hawai’i in 2022, after compiling a 9-2 record at No. 1 doubles and helping the Rainbow Warriors to a 12-6 record. He also was an honorable mention All-Big West selection in singles in 2024, and played No. 2 and No. 3 singles for Hawai’i during his senior season in 2025, when he served as a team captain.
In addition to his coaching experience at Hawai’i, Collins has spent his last seven summers serving as a tennis instructor at The Claremont Hotel and Spa in Berkeley, where he led private and group sessions for players of all ages and skill levels. Collins also held a role as a tennis instructor at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York in 2024.
Collins earned his bachelor’s of science degree in kinesiology and rehabilitation science from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa in 2025.
