Backpacking Trips

Whether an overnight trip to Henry Coe State Park or a multi-day trip to Yosemite National Park, Adventure Rec runs a variety of different backpacking trips to meet the interests of different students. From Intro to Backpacking classes and mellow weekend trips to long drives and miles, early mornings, and summiting high peaks in the Sierra and Big Sur, our trips are sure to bring a sense of adventure and exposure to California’s beauty. 

Kayaking Tours

Life here in the Monterey Bay isn't complete until you have been on the Bay. What better way to do this than in a kayak? Kayaking trips take place out of the Santa Cruz Harbor, the Elkhorn Slough and the bay just outside of Moss Landing. All are teeming with marine mammals and coastal birds. You may see harbor seals, southern sea otters, sea lions, humpback whales, white pelicans, brown pelicans and more! No prior kayaking experience necessary.

Surf Classes

Be a part of the sport that has defined much of the Santa Cruz culture since the turn of the century. Learn to paddle, catch waves, stand up, and turn. You will also learn the etiquette of surfing, how to read surf conditions and judge safe entry and exit points. This class will meet one day a week for four weeks and will cover all the basics of surfing. We'll travel to various surf spots from Cowell's in Santa Cruz to beach breaks in Aptos. 

Day Hikes

There is a lot to explore on the Central Coast, and our day hikes are a great way to experience the biodiversity and views!  Day hikes range from mellow strolls through the Redwoods to local swimming holes, to summiting coastal peaks with ocean views. Other hikes watch the full moon over the bay, our hike from campus through sprawling meadows to the coast. Whether you're looking for a mellow half day hike or a full day adventure, our day hikes have something for everyone. 

Camping Trips

Our camping trips throughout California offer a blend of ocean views, redwood forests, and starry skies. From Big Sur’s dramatic cliffs to the towering Jeffery Pines in the Sierra, these trips invite you to unplug, explore trails, relax by the campfire, and fall asleep to the sound of waves or rustling trees. Most trips are at a campground with primitive amenities. Whether you're pitching a tent near the beach or nestled in the mountains, our camping trips deliver unforgettable outdoor adventures year-round.

Rock Climbing

Reach new heights with our rock climbing programs! If you're new to rock climbing, check out our six-week introductory classes at Pacific Edge Climbing Gym, transportation included! Throughout the year, Adventure Rec also hosts specialized workshops on anchor building, knot tying, and gear placement. When the season’s right, join us for outdoor climbing trips along the Central Coast or in the deserts of California and Arizona.
