PORTLAND, Or. – The UC Santa Cruz women's soccer team picked up their second win of the weekend in dominant fashion, defeating Lewis and Clark 4-1 with goals from
Camille Anneet,
Sydney Boyd,
Kristi Truong, and
Cadence Fisher. The Pioneers struck first in the contest, connecting quick off the opening whistle with a goal just 16 seconds into the game but UC Santa Cruz responded quickly and never looked back. The Banana Slugs outshot Lewis and Clark 19-4, putting eight attempts on frame to the Pioneers one while earning a 6-4 advantage in corners. With the victory, UCSC is now 2-1-1 on the year and will travel to Claremont, California to take on CMS and Pomona-Pitzer on Sept. 11 and Sept. 13.
How It Happened
In a wild sequence of events, the Pioneers came out swinging off the opening whistle, sending a pass down to the top of the box before firing a long shot into the back of the goal just 16 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead.
The Banana Slugs promptly responded with
Camille Anneet scoring the equalizer at 4:52 with a rip to the upper 90. UC Santa Cruz controlled the pace of play for the remainder of the first half, outshooting the Pioneers 11-2 but the match remained tied at the halftime break.
After the break, UC Santa Cruz got back to work with the heavy offensive pressure, keeping the Pioneers back line busy. In the 53rd minute, UC Santa Cruz earned a corner and saw
Sydney Boyd score an olimpico to the far post over the outstretched hands of the Lewis and Clark keeper to make it 2-1. Boyd's goal stands out as a tremendous display of precision and finesse as her shot curled in perfectly from the corner, tucking into the side netting after soaring over the keepers hands for the unassisted goal from the corner.
The Banana Slugs continued to control the contest as
Erin Freeman slotted a pass to
Kristi Truong who struck from 25 yards out in the 77th minute to make it 3-1. With just under 30 seconds left in the contest,
Emilie Brack found
Cadence Fisher making a run across the box and Fisher sent it straight into the back of the net to put the finishing touches on a 4-1 victory for UC Santa Cruz.
