GEORGETOWN, Tx. – The UC Santa Cruz men's soccer team fought to a 0-0 draw with the Southwestern (Tx.) Pirates on Sunday morning. Coming into the match, the Pirates had scored 23 goals across their nine previous contests, but they couldn't get past
Tobias Jacobson-Bell as the sophomore goalkeeper recorded 10 saves to keep Southwestern off the board. Both teams had their chances as Southwestern outshot UCSC 22-12, but the teams were closer in accuracy with the Pirates putting 11 shots on frame to UCSC's seven. The Banana Slugs are now 4-4-1 on the season and will return home to host Carleton College at noon on October 4th.
How It Happened
The Pirates featured a heavy attack from the opening whistle, registering six shots in the first ten minutes but only one was on frame with
Tobias Jacobson-Bell there to make the save. UC Santa Cruz managed to counter and put two shots on goal from
Oliver Gill and
Lawyer Mamaril but both attempts were saved as the game stayed tied. The first half continued to feature back and forth attacks with both teams putting up dangerous attempts, but the keepers remained steady in goal to keep the contest scoreless. In the 43rd minute, the Pirates put a shot on frame that resulted in a team save as it was cleared off the line, sending the two teams tied 0-0 heading into halftime.
The second half saw similar action as Southwestern took 10 shots in the final 45 minutes while UCSC took six. The Pirates put five of their attempts on frame while UCSC put three on frame but much like the first half, both keepers recorded the saves needed to end the contest 0-0 after 90 minutes of action.
