CHICAGO, Ill. – The UC Santa Cruz men's basketball team fell to No. 11 University of Chicago 82-64 on Friday afternoon.
Andrew Ferrara-Jones led the team with 21 points with
Ben Lim adding 12 points while
Caden Breznikar had 10 boards and seven points. The Banana Slugs shot 44.4% from the field but only hit two of 15 shots from downtown in the contest. The Slugs are now 1-2 on the year and will be back in action tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. PST to take on No. 3 Emory University.
How It Happened
The Maroons struck first with a layup and a three pointer to take a 5-0 lead, but the Banana Slugs answered with an 11-7 run to tie the game at 11-11 with points from
Ben Lim,
Caden Breznikar, and
Andrew Ferrara-Jones. UCSC continued to push forward as they took a slight one point lead at 14-13 with a free throw from
Ben Lim and two points from
Leo Wagner. From there, the Maroons were able to get their offense going as they used the final eight minutes of the first half to build an 11 point advantage at 41-30. University of Chicago led by as much as 14 but key baskets from Ferrara-Jones and
Ben Lim narrowed the gap before the halftime break.
The Maroons hit a three to get the second half started before working to a 54-39 lead with 13:52 to play.
Andrew Ferrara-Jones and
Leo Wagner led a 7-0 run to cut the gap to 54-46 but Chicago took over from there. The Maroons were able to outscore UCSC 28-18 down the stretch, ending the game on a 5-0 run to seal the 82-64 victory over the Banana Slugs.
