Banana Slugs Earn 1-0 Victory Over Kingsmen in Southern California Clash

THOUSAND OAKS, Ca. – The UC Santa Cruz men's soccer team improved to 6-5-1 on the season with a 1-0 victory over the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen thanks to a first half goal from Oliver Gill. The Banana Slugs peppered the CLU goalkeeper, outshooting the Kingsmen 21-14 overall but 10-2 in shots on frame, forcing the goalkeeper to make some key saves throughout the contest. Tobias Jacobson-Bell earned the shutout with two saves in his 90 minutes between the pipes. UC Santa Cruz will be back in action on Oct. 15 when they travel to UC Merced at 5:00 p.m.

How It Happened
The Banana Slugs were knocking on the door early as Roman Avagimov took a shot on goal just 59 seconds after the opening whistle with Soren Groessl adding two more on frame in the 7th and 8th minute. The Kingsmen and Banana Slugs briefly went back and forth but UCSC maintained much of the attacking pressure as they saw shots on goal from Zander Crawford, Kotetstu Horike, and Alessandro Castro before Olvier Gill broke through in the 34th minute. Gill managed to intercept a pass from the CLU back line and snuck a well-paced near sided shot past the keeper on the left side and into the back of the net to give UCSC the 1-0 first half lead.

After the halftime break, the Kingsmen tried to find an equalizer, outshooting UC Santa Cruz 9-6 in the final 45 minutes but their two attempts that were on frame was saved by Tobias Jacobson-Bell as the Banana Slugs earned the 1-0 victory over Cal Lutheran.
