
Banana Slugs Lead After Day One of Slug Shootout

SANTA CRUZ, Ca. – The UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs opened the 2025-26 men's swim and dive season with a great showing on Day 1 of the Slug Shootout. After day one of competition, UC Santa Cruz sits in first place with 477 points with Southwestern Oregon CC in second with 358 points and Whittier in third with 254. The Banana Slugs will be back in action tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. for the final day of competition.

UC Santa Cruz opened the 2025-26 season with a victory in the 400 medley relay, combining for a time of 3:27.53 with the B relay taking third in 3:30.81. The Banana Slugs saw Dylan Blietz take third place in the 1000 free with a time of 10:00.34. In the 200 free, the Banana Slugs took third through sixth as Massimo Reyna, Kent Nishida, Owen Blanford, and Jude Robinson swam 1:45.31, 1:46.89, 1:47.16, and 1:47.97. The Banana Slugs saw Grayson Davies take home the win with a time of 52.66 seconds while Asher Kates took third in 52.99 seconds. PJ Fortune and Sebastian Santiago went 1-2 in the 100 breast with the duo touching the wall in 57.81s and 58.10s. In the 50 free, UC Santa Cruz swept the top three spots with Kyle Reitan winning the event in 21.18s while Andrew Koika and Charlie Hussain took second and third in 21.57 and 22.30. Kyle Reitan picked up another win later in the day, recording a 51.19s in the 100 fly with Morgan Madril (51.66s), Jude Robinson (51.78s), Kent Nishida (52.30s), and Andrew Koika (52.62s) taking second through fifth, respectively. Asher Kates was the top finisher for UCSC in the 400 IM, swimming a 4:17.76 to take fourth with Sebastian Santiago taking fifth in 4:17.96. UCSC closed out the evening with a first place finish in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:26.38. Â
