FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The UC Santa Cruz men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to the Captains of Christopher Newport in the C2C Men's Soccer Conference Semifinal on Friday afternoon. The Slugs were narrowly outshot 9-8 with
Max Beldner tallying the solo goal for UCSC with just 10 seconds left in the contest. With the loss, the Slugs' season comes to an end with an overall record of 6-2-9.
How It Happened
UC Santa Cruz pressured early as they took a shot in the opening 10 minutes of action, but CNU controlled much of the first half. The Slugs best chance came in the 26th minute as Nico Herrara-Land and
Soren Groessl both had shots blocked.
The Captains were able to find the back of the net in the 44th minute and take a 1-0 lead over the Slugs. UCSC immediately countered but
Sigifredo Valencia's shot attempt was blocked, sending the Slugs into the halftime break trailing 1-0.
CNU wasted little time in the second half as they struck again in the 58th minute to double their lead to 2-0. UC Santa Cruz had chances down the stretch but couldn't break through until it was too late as
Max Beldner scored with 10 seconds on the clock to cut the deficit to 2-1. Unfortunately, the goal was too little too late as CNU earned the 2-1 victory over UC Santa Cruz in the Conference Semifinal.
