CLAREMONT, Ca. – The UC Santa Cruz women's basketball team put up a strong fight on the road against Pomona-Pitzer but ultimately fell 57-50 in a hard-fought game.
Pomona-Pitzer took control early, finishing the first quarter with a big 19-6 lead. UCSC responded in the second quarter with a 19-10 run, closing the gap and heading into halftime down by just four points at 29-25.
In the third quarter, the Banana Slugs continued to chip away, tying the game at 35-35 before Pomona-Pitzer regained a narrow 39-37 edge by the end of the quarter. UCSC surged ahead at the start of the fourth, taking a 44-41 lead. The final minutes were fiercely competitive, but Pomona-Pitzer regained momentum and secured the win with a final score of 57-50.
Emilie Ngo led UCSC with 19 points, while Talysha Wilkerson added 11. Jenna Gorton was dominant on the boards, pulling down 18 rebounds. The Banana Slugs out-rebounded the Sagehens 31-26, but Pomona-Pitzer's 13 assists and clutch plays down the stretch proved decisive.
UCSC looks to bounce back in their upcoming game against La Verne, which is scheduled for Thursday, November 14th, at 11:00 a.m. in La Verne.
