UC Santa Cruz Swim and Dive had a great day in the pool, defeating Simpson University in a dual on Saturday.
One of the many highlights had
Maddy Gruender winning her heat in the 100 Back in a school record 57.80. Gruender's time was 0.13 better than the former mark set by
Elisabeth Lundgren last year. The main event was the 400 yard mixed relay with two male and female swimmers in each quartet.
"We had a very fun meet in some unpleasant weather against Simpson," said head coach Matt Crawford. "They were only able to field 2 men and 2 women, so we ran mixed relays which is always fun."
Overall, the Banana Slugs used their depth to give plenty of swimmers plenty of time in the pool and the chance to participate in other events outside their usual routine. Over two dozen swimmers posted PRs. In addition to Gruender's record, first-year
Fiona Lei swam a 58.59 in the 100 Fly, which was the seventh-best time in school history.
The Banana Slugs return to the pool next weekend when they take on Cal Poly SLO for Senior Day.
