BEVERLY, MA.-- UC Santa Cruz hit a season-high .390 and hardly trailed in a three-set sweep over Endicott (25-15, 25-19, 25-17) Friday night.
The Banana Slugs go to 12–5 on the year after their second straight sweep on their New England roadtrip.
There were three ties in the first set before
Kelly Ann Greene's kill and ace started a 5–1 run to give UC Santa Cruz the lead for good. The second set was the closest. After the host Gulls scored the first point,
Sydney Ahrendt had a kill that tied it. The game stayed close until a kill by
Ashley Magley started a 5–0 run that made it 13–7, and forced in Endicott timeout. The run continued with aces by
Sydney May and
Kate Lau helping to make it 17–8 as UC Santa Cruz cruised to take the set.Â
Lau opened the third set with a kill before the match got close again. With the Banana Slugs leading 6–5, an Endicott service error started an 8–0 run by the visitors, which was capped by Greene's ace and a combo block by
Peyton Tazelaar &
Vanessa Ojeikere. That made the score 14-5, and the Banana Slugs did not let the Gulls get within five points the rest of the match.Â
Magley led the Banana Slugs with 11 kills. Lau and Ahrendt had six kills each, while Lau had a team-high eight digs.
Emily Pasion had six digs to go over 800 in her career.
Alessandra Ponzo led the team with 18 assists. The Banana Slugs finish the roadtrip Saturday with a doubleheader in Cambridge against Springfield and MIT.
