Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | by Carlie Floyd

Despite great second half, Banana Slugs fall to No. 3 Christopher Newport

UC Santa Cruz exits C2C Tournament with 81-73 loss

The UC Santa Cruz Men's Basketball team played fourth-ranked Christopher Newport for their second game of the C2C Tournament at Kaiser Permanente Arena. The Banana Slugs recently played the Captains three weeks earlier, and unfortunately the Slugs lost 74-61.

The starters of the game were Ian McCloskey, Zino Okah, Avri Finch, Treyson Keating, and Eric DeBrine. The first half started with Christopher Newport taking control of the game and adding the first points to the board with a 3-pointer (19:40). Yet the Slugs were able to gain possession and Finch contributed two points (3-2, 19:18). The Slugs were keeping up with the Captains, however the Captains were fast with their transitional shots and fast passes and went up by 15 points (35-20, 5:45). Within the last 27 seconds of the half, Yasukochi made a great assist for DeBrine to make a beautiful 3-pointer making the score 44-30 as the first half ended with the Banana Slugs only 14 points behind.

The second half started with the Banana Slugs coming. UC Santa Cruz had great transitions with many great plays, giving the Captains a run for their money. A great play that was made in the second half was from Tyler Kessinger, who added two points from a spin off making the score 54-37 (15:11). A shot was made by Zach Granberry who faked one of the Captains and then made a layup making the score 54-39, who was assisted by Justin Yasukochi (14:09). It is a very aggressive half with a lot of physicality. With only three seconds left in the game, DeBrine makes a 3-pointer making the score 79-73. However, Christopher Newport got two free throw shots and secured their win. The game ended with a sad loss for the Banana Slugs with the score being 81-73.

Kessinger had a great game offensively and defensively, contributing 17 points and 5 rebounds. McCloskey had 15 points and Finch had 14 points. DeBrine had the most rebounds with 8 while also scoring 10 points.

This will conclude the UC Santa Cruz Men's Basketball team season. They did an outstanding job playing their hardest.
