Goals galore as Banana Slugs defeat Cal Maritime

Six different Banana Slugs found the back of the net as UC Santa Cruz erased an early deficit in a 6-1 win over Cal Maritime on Tuesday.
UC Santa Cruz improved to 5-5-1 with the win after their third win in a row.

The Keelhaulers struck first, with Nicolas de Simas putting back a rebound in the 27th minute for a quick 1-0 lead. The Banana Slugs equalized in the 22nd minute, when Michael Skvarna got his first college goal with a header at the left post after a pass from Torin Volkamer. Three minutes later, the Banana Slugs took the lead when Zander Crawford scored.
"I feel we are quickly getting to know each other, and get better and better every game," Skvarna said after the game.

Five minutes into the second half, Soren Groessl made it 3-1 with his first college goal off Luca Bravo's pass. The UC Santa Cruz combination play got another goal in the 78th minute when Adrian Jacobs got his team-best fourth goal of 2023 from Furio Jacomini's pass after a UC Santa Cruz corner kick. Volkamer made it 5-1 with under ten minutes left after a long pass from Emanuel Tames-Kaimowitz. Acer Cristea finished scoring with under ten seconds left on a fast break. It was the sophomore's first college goal.
"I was really looking to score in this match," said Cristea. "I knew I was going to start and get some minutes. I left it late but I'm happy I managed to get my first goal and hopefully it continues from there."

Overall, the Banana Slugs had a 31-8 shot advantage, including 19-1 in the second half. Chris Jamrock had three saves in the first half before ceding the gloves to Declan Fee, who preserved the shutout in his college debut.
