Four Banana Slugs scored in double figures as UC Santa Cruz had a wire-to-wire 85-48 win over Lincoln (CA) Friday evening at the West Field House
UC Santa Cruz improved to 11-4 and broke a two-game losing streak.
The evening was the first-ever UC Santa Cruz basketball Pride Night, held in conjunction with the Lionel Cantú Queer Resource Center. In front of the largest home crowd of the season, the Banana Slugs opened the game hot. They hit their first three shots and produced a pair of steals to go up 7-0 in the first 1:33 and force Lincoln to call time out. The run continued as
Tess Oakley-Stilson had an "And-One" and
Amanda Inserra had a mid-range jumper to make it 17-0 before the visitors finally made a basket. UC Santa Cruz shot 55% on field goals in the first quarter to open a 28-14 lead, and pushed the lead to 21 when
Aubrey Wagner's steal and behind-the-back pass to
Ashley Kowack made in 38-17 with 7:05 left in the half. The Banana Slugs ended up shooting 48.6% to lead 48-23 at halftime. All 15 available players got minutes in the second half for UC Santa Cruz as they put the game away.
Inserra led the Banana Slugs with 18 points on 7-13 shooting, including 4-10 from three-point range. Kowack added 13, and
Kaylee Murphy had another double-double with 12 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
Talysha Wilkerson had 10 points off the bench. Wagner finished with six assists to move into tenth place on the UCSC all-time career list with 172.
Lincoln's Lindsay Claude led all scorers with 26 points while playing all 40 minutes. Overall, UC Santa Cruz shot 45.1% (32-for-71) from the field for the game, and had a 57-30 rebound advantage.
The Banana Slugs are back in action next weekend when they open a two-game roadtrip Saturday at Cal Lutheran.
