– UC Santa Cruz wrapped up their trip to Virginia as they swept Misericordia University (PA) and won 3-1 over the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College.
Match #1 – vs. Misericordia
In the first set, the Banana Slugs would start on a 6-3 run on the strength of four
Colby Hurdle service aces. The Cougars would answer with a 6-0 run to take their largest lead of the set at 9-7. The Banana Slugs took the lead for good at 10-9 and gained their largest lead of the set at six, at 19-13, on a Cougar attack error. The Banana Slugs won the first set 25-21.
In the second set, the Banana Slugs started the set on a 17-8 run capped by a
Nico Espinosa kill, and won the second set 25-15 on
Xander Vriesman's kill. In the third set, the two teams would trade points for the first twenty eight serves. The Cougars would then go on a 4-0 run, capped by a Billy Murphy ace, to take the lead at 18-14. The Banana Slugs would answer with a 10-5 run to take the lead at 24-23. After the Cougars tied the set at 25-25, the Banana Slugs would score the final two points of the set – one on a
Cinjun Coe kill and one on an attack error by the Cougars – to win the third set 27-25.
Coe led the Banana Slugs with 12 kills. Hurdle finished with five aces as the Banana Slugs served a season-high 13.
Match #2 vs. Randolph-Macon
After the two teams traded points over the first sixteen serves, the host Yellow Jackets would go on a 10-4 run to take the lead at 18-12. The Banana Slugs worked their way back into the set and fought off three consecutive set points to tie the set at 24-24. The Banana Slugs would eventually score the final two points of the set – off a kill and a service ace by
Colton Jeffrey – to win the first set 27-25.
In the second set, the Yellow Jackets would start the set on a 10-7 spurt capped by a Gio DeLuca kill. The Banana Slugs would tie the set at 21-21 on an attack error by the Yellow Jackets. After trading the next fourteen serves, the Yellow Jackets scored the final two points of the set to win the second set 28-26.
In the third set, the Banana Slugs started the set on a 16-8 run capped by a Coe kill. The Banana Slugs led by thirteen, at 23-10, before winning the set 25-13 and hitting a whopping .471.
The Yellow Jackets would start the fourth set on a 12-7 run, but the Banana Slugs would go on a 9-3 run, capped by a Jeffrey kill, to take the lead 16-15. The two teams would trade points, and the lead, over the next fourteen serves. After the Yellow Jackets tied the set at 25-25, the Banana Slugs scored the final two points to win the fourth set 27-25.
Jeffrey had 17 kills to lead the Banana Slugs while Coe added 16.
Tennessee Fulks had 28 assists.
The Banana Slugs will wrap up their regular season next Saturday at 4 pm as they take on California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.
