Banana Slugs Lose Two in Wisconsin to open roadtrip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KENOSHA (2-5)UC Santa Cruz started a four-match trip to America's Dairyland as they took on old rivals Milwaukee School of Engineering and NCAA Division III #9 Carthage College in Kenosha. The Banana Slugs fell 3-1 in both matches.
 
Match #1 – vs. Milwaukee School of Engineering
 
In the first set, the Raiders started the set on a 14-9 run capped by an Austyn Bella kill. The Banana Slugs would respond with a 15-10 run, capped by a Colton Jeffrey kill, to tie the set at 24-24. The Raiders would score the final two points of the set and won the first set 26-24 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the Raiders started the set on an 11-5 run capped by an attack error by the Banana Slugs. The Raiders would never relinquish the lead and won the second set 25-23 and tied the match at 1-1. In the third set, the Raiders started the set on a 10-6 spurt capped by an attack error by the Banana Slugs. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 9-5 spurt of their own, capped by a Cinjun Coe kill, to tie the set at 15-15. The two teams wuld traded points for the next eleven serves before the Banana Slugs would take a two point lead at 22-20 on a Coe service ace. After the Raiders tied the set at 24-24, the Banana Slugs scored the final two points of the set to win the third set 26-24 and trimmed the Raiders' lead to 2-1. In the fourth set, the Raiders would start the set on a 14-10 spurt capped by a Kalvin Fellows kill. The Banana Slugs would trim the lead to two, at 20-18, on an assisted block by Aaron Fox and Zachary Thompson. The Raiders would win the fourth set 25-20 and the match 3-1.
 
Coe led the Banana Slugs with nineteen kills and three aces. Colton Jeffrey added 10.
 
Match #2 vs. #9 Carthage
 In the first set, the Firebirds would start the set on a 14-8 run capped by a Matt Slivinski block. The Banana Slugs would not get any closer as the Firebirds won the first set 25-20 and took a 1-0 lead in the match. In the second set, the two teams would trade points for the first twenty-two serves. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at 13-11 on an attack error by the Firebirds. The Firebirds would go on a 10-7 spurt to take the lead for good at 21-20. The Firebirds would win the second set 25-21 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the two teams would trade points over the first twenty serves. The Banana Slugs would go on a 5-0 spurt, capped by an Aaron Fox block, for a 15-10 lead. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at 21-15 after a pair of Zac Pittard service aces. However, Carthage would then go on a 9-3 run, capped by a Slivinski service ace, to tie the set at 24-24. The Banana Slugs played their way out of two match points and scored the final two points of the set-finishing on a Pittard kill- to win the third set 28-26 and trim the Firebirds' lead to 2-1.
In the fourth set, the Firebirds would start the set on an 8-3 run. The Banana Slugs would come as close as one, at 8-7, but the Firebirds won the fourth set 25-19 and won the match 3-1.
 
Coe had twelve kills to lead the Banana Slugs. Fox had 10 and Jeffrey had nine along with a team-high11 digs
 
The next matches for the Banana Slugs will be tomorrow as they take on Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee in a doubleheader, with the first match set to start at 7 am Pacific.
