Box Score SANTA CRUZ (2-2) – The Banana Slugs wrapped up their four-game road trip as they took on NCAA Division II member Dominican University in San Rafael. The Penguins outscored the Banana Slugs by six in the second half en route to a 76-70 victory in the schools' first matchup in 13 years.
The Banana Slugs began the half on a 13-7 run capped by a
Simon Mueller-Landsvik jumper with 14:38 left in the half, their the largest of the half. From that point, the Penguins went on a 10-0 run, capped by a Zamaria Odom layup with 10:02 left in the half, to gain the lead at 17-13. The two teams would trade the lead back and forth for the remainder of the half and were tied at 30-30 at halftime.
In the second half, the Penguins started on an 8-0 run, capped by a Jake Blazona free throw with 17:06 left, to take the lead for good at 38-30. The Penguins gained their largest lead of the ballgame at seventeen, at 69-52, on an Anthony Dennis layup with 3:32 left. The Banana Slugs rallied and finished the game on an 18-7 run capped by an
Avri Finch layup with five seconds left.
Finch had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the Banana Slugs.
Ian McCloskey had 12,
Zach Granberry had 11 and Mueller-Landsvik and
Calvin Keyes both had ten. Mueller-Landsvik had a career-high six steals as UC Santa Cruz had a season-high 11.
Odom had a game-high 20 off the bench for the Penguins.
The Banana Slugs shot 36.5% (23-63) from the field, 29.2% (7-24) from the three-point line and were 77.3% (17-22) from the free throw line. Dominican outscored UC Santa Cruz 32-10 in points off the bench.
The Banana Slugs will wrap up their regular season schedule February 19
th as they take on West Coast Baptist College at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Tip off is set for 7 pm.
