FREDERICKSBURG, VA -
Kaylee Murphy scored eight of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to key UC Santa Cruz's 64-59 win at Mary Washington on Sunday.
UC Santa Cruz improves to 14-3 and earned a split at the C2C Classic, a preview of the Conference Tournament in two weeks.
"I am proud of our team's grit late in the game," said head coach
Todd Kent, who earned his 150th career win. "They dug in defensively when we switched and got some much needed stops. Playing against two great teams back-to-back and finishing the way we did in the fourth quarter both games was impressive."Â
The Banana Slugs led 16-13 after one quarter but trailed by five at halftime. After the Eagles had their largest lead of the game at 38-29, UC Santa Cruz went on a 9-1 run over four minutes, finishing with
Divine Taylor finding
Tess Oakley-Stilson for a reverse layup to get within 39-38 with 2:24 left in the third quarter.
It stayed a one-possession lead for UMW going into the fourth, and with 6:28 to play,
Aubrey Wagner found Murphy on a cutting layup to give the Banana Slugs a 46-45 lead. UMW retook the lead with two free throws on the next possession, and there were six leads changes over the next three minutes.
UC Santa Cruz took the lead for good after Murphy stole the ball, and then Wagner found
Amanda Inserra who hit her first three of the day to make it 56-51 with under 3 minutes to play.
After back-to-back shots by UMW got them to within 61-59 with 12 seconds left, Oakley-Stilson and Murphy each went 2-2 from the line to secure the win.
Murphy was named to the C2C Classic All Tournament team, and she passed Megan Gaynor for 12th place on the school career scoring chart.
Oakley-Stilson scored 10 of her 16 points in the second half. She also had team highs of three assists and three steals.
Ashley Kowack also finished with 16 points. Tory Martin led the Eagles (17-7) with 19 points on 8-10 shooting.
