Late goal gives UMW win in C2C Semifinal

NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Second-seeded UC Santa Cruz had a 14-9 shot advantage but a late counter goal gave Mary Washington a 1-0 win in the Coast-To-Coast Tournament semifinal.

UC Santa Cruz ends the regular season at 9-5-2. The Eagles (12-4-4) advance to Sunday's Conference Final against defending National Champion Christopher Newport.

Mary Washington had the first two shots in the game, which were stopped by goalkeeper Alyssa Diaz-Tucker and defender Arianna LePage.

The Banana Slugs then began to build possession and have some good opportunities.  Substitutes Sydney Boyd, Kayla Alexander and Tatiana Fernandez all had shots in the last nine minutes of the half, but there was no score at halftime.

After Mary Washington missed their first shot of the second half, the Banana Slugs had 10 minutes of continuous possession, culminating with Alexander getting a head off of a corner kick, but missing wide.
In the 67th minute, Karina Bulli was sprung by a pass from Camille Anneet to get one-on-one with the Eagles Goalkeeper, who parried the pass away for a corner.
Bulli got another chance seven minutes later that hit the back of the net, but was waved off for offside. The Banana Slugs then had three shots off three straight corners in the 80th minute, and appeared to have the go-ahead goal before it was cleared off the line.

The Eagles answered with a shot to take the lead with 6:13 left. In the 87th minute, Mary Washington was reduced to ten players after a red card for unsporting conduct. However, the Banana Slugs could not get another look at the goal before time expired.
