SALISBURY, MARYLAND- UC Santa Cruz had a 13-4 shot advantage and bulk of possession, but a second-half penalty for UW-Whitewater was the difference as the Warhawks escaped with a 1-0 result in the Coast-To-Coast Tournament First Round.
UC Santa Cruz closes the season at 6-10-3.
Whitewater had an early chance that goalkeeper
Arman Salimi handled. After that, the Banana Slugs had several good chances early, with All-Conference forward
Adrian Jacobs and
Tanner Boyea having two shots each in the first 18 minutes, while
Max Beldner had UC Santa Cruz's best chance when his header in the 14th minute was saved at the far post.
After the goalless first half, the Banana Slugs were called for a penalty with under 30 minutes to play. Whitewater converted what would then be their only shot on target in the second half to take the lead.
UC Santa Cruz pressed forward, and
Tyler Allred almost tied it in the 83rd minute, but his shot was saved.
UC Santa Cruz then played a man down after a sending-off in the 85th minute, but still created chances looking for the late equalizer. The Banana Slugs couldn't get the shot they needed and Whitewater killed the clock.
Salimi finished with one save to push his season total to 39. Allred led the team with four shots.
