Box Score ATHERTON- UC Santa Cruz traveled to Atherton, California on Tuesday to play Menlo College. The Slugs are 3-1 overall with a three-win streak in their season and Menlo is 6-2. It was the first matchup between the NorCal schools in eight years.
The game ended with a 76-97 win for Menlo.
The younger Slugs showed their skill in the first half with sophomore
Zino Okah hitting an impressive step back, fade away jumper to open the game.
Henry Pikus, a talented freshman, came off the bench in the first half with a big pull up jumper and drive to stop a Menlo run and get UC Santa Cruz within 17-14. Deep into the half a technical was called on the Oaks and
Avri Finch shot the free throws making both of them to stop a Menlo run. The half ended with the hosts up 52-38.
Menlo was up 73-52 midway through the second half before a 14-3 UC Santa Cruz run closed by a
Calvin Keyes jumper got UC Santa Cruz within 76-66 with 6:05 left. Okah and Kessinger both hit huge threes to get UC Santa Cruz within eight at 80-72 with 4:36 left. However, the hosts went on their own 14-2 run to get the lead back to 20 at 94-74.
Tyler Kessinger finished the game with 17 points, and Finch ended the game with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Okah also hit two powerful threes as well finishing with 14 points.
UC Santa Cruz travels this weekend to take on Pomona-Pitzer and CMS at the David Wells Classic in Claremont.
