CLAREMONT- A first half goal was all that separated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and UC Santa Cruz as the host Athenas held off the Banana Slugs 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
UC Santa Cruz went to 8-4-2 on the year. The game's only score came in the 12th minute when the Athenas knocked in a shot from the top of the box.
Bronwyn Eyre almost tied it under six minutes later, but her header from
Sydney Boyd's cross went off the right post. Boyd has another chance to tie it in the 29th minute, but her shot went wide.
The game was just as exciting in the second half with both teams getting good chances. The Banana Slugs had the last chance with under three minutes, but
Amanda Scott's 25-yard free kick was saved. On the Athenas' attempted clearout, Boyd pounced on it, but her cross was cleared out for a corner kick. The Banana Slugs then peppered the box with crosses but couldn't get a clear chance before the Athenas cleared it out to escape with the win.
Alyssa Diaz-Tucker had four saves in the game. The Banana Slugs close the regular season on Tuesday afternoon when they host UC Merced.
