Men's Volleyball Falls Twice on Saturday

Banana Slugs drop wild five-set match to Concordia in afternoon, drop match to Menlo in nightcap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SANTA CRUZ (1-30)UC Santa Cruz finished up the home portion of their schedule as they took on Division III Concordia University (WI) and NAIA member Menlo College at Kaiser Permanente Arena. The Banana Slugs lost 3-2 to the Falcons and 3-1 to the Oaks in the nighcap.
 
Match #1 – vs. Concordia (WI)
 
In the first set, the two teams would trade points for the first twenty eight serves. The Banana Slugs gained the lead for good at 15-14 on a kill by Cinjun Coe and won the first set 25-20. In the second set, as with the first, the teams traded points for the first sixteen serves. The Banana Slugs would gain the lead for good at 9-8 on an Aaron Fox kill and won the second set 25-16. In the third set, the Falcons would gain the lead at 6-5, but the Banana Slugs would get back into the set and took the lead at 9-8 on a Coe kill. After the two teams traded points, and the lead, for the next sixteen serves, the Banana Slugs took the lead at 17-16 on a Nico Espinosa service ace. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at 24-21 on a Zachary Thompson kill. The Falcons however would claw their way back into the set, tied the set at 24-24, and would eventually score the final five points to win the third set 26-24 and trim the Banana Slugs lead to 2-1.
In the fourth set, the Banana Slugs started the set 4-0 and would gain their largest lead at 16-10 on a Colton Jeffrey kill. From that point, the Falcons went on an 11-5 run, capped by a James Althoff kill, to tie the set at 21-21. The Falcons scored the final two points of the set to win the set 26-24 and tie the match at 2-2.
In the fifth set, the Banana Slugs started the set on a 4-1 run capped by an assisted block by Braden Collins and Thompson. The Falcons crawled back and would tie the set at 9-9 on an Alex Holland kill. The Falcons would take the lead at 13-12 and would win the fifth set 15-13 and won the match.
Jeffrey led the Banana Slugs with sixteen kills.
 
Match #2 vs. Menlo

In the first set, the Oaks would take an early 6-3 lead after a kill by Konrad Stoklosinski. The Banana Slugs would stay within striking range and would eventually take the lead at 21-20 after an Oaks' attack error. After the Oaks took the lead back at 23-22 , the Banana Slugs scored the final three points of the set – one on a Collins kill and the last two on service aces by Braden Collins to win the first set 25-23. In the second set, the two teams traded points back and forth for the first sixteen serves. The Oaks gained the lead for good, at 9-8, on a Stoklosinski kill. The Oaks won the second set 25-20 and tied the match at 1-1. In the third set, the teams traded points for the first ten serves before the Oaks would gain the lead for at 6-5 on a Josh Sullivan kill and won the third set 25-23.
In the fourth set, the Oaks gained the lead for good at 7-6 on a Sullivan kill before winning set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
 
Freshman Dylan Foreman had thirteen kills to lead the Banana Slugs. Collins finished the day with 71 assists, 22 digs and 4 aces in his first two career starts.
The Banana Slugs travel to the Midwest for their next matches as they will take on rivals Milwaukee School of Engineering and Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Saturday the fifth.
