Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Furious comeback falls short as Banana Slugs defeated 72-65 at Pacific.

Wagner hits career high as UC Santa Cruz splits on season-opening roadtrip.

FOREST GROVE, OR - UC Santa Cruz couldn't overcome a cold start as host Pacific built a big lead and held on for a 72-65 win.
The Banana Slugs go to 1-1 on the young season, while Pacific is 1-0.

The Banana Slugs had early trouble finding the target, shooting just 28% (16-57) combined in the first three quarters while the Boxers built a 56-38 lead. In the final ten minutes, UC Santa Cruz found their shooting touch. Aubrey Wagner converted the old-fashioned three-point play to get UC Santa Cruz to within 10 at 70-60 with 1:41 left.
The Boxers controlled the clock however and kept UC Santa Cruz from completing the comeback.
The Banana Slugs shot 52.4 % (11-21) in the final quarter to finish the game shooting 34.6% (27-78) from the field. Wagner led the squad with a career-high 19 points to go with four assists and a block. Kaylee Murphy added 18 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and 22nd of her career. Ashley Kowack added 17 points, passing Brianne Faria (1999-02) for sixth on the school career scoring list.

The Banana Slugs regroup to face Division II neighbor Cal State Monterey Bay on Wednesday night in Seaside.
