SALISBURY, MD - UC Santa Cruz worked hard to climb out of an early hole against the country's fifth-ranked team, but couldn't get the tying goal in the 1-0 loss to Christopher Newport in the Coast-To-Coast Championship game.
The Banana Slugs end their year at 9-9-2. The Captains stay undefeated at 16-0-1 and advance to the NCAA Tournament next weekend.
Sarah Smith put CNU's first shot of the game in the goal less that four minutes in. The game's intensity then increased.
Katie Herm had UCSC's best chance of the half in the 14th minute, but her shot from outside the box went wide. CNU had a last-second shot before halftime adeptly pushed over the bar by
Alyssa Diaz-Tucker to keep UCSC within 1.
The second half was back-and-forth as well as UC Santa Cruz pushed for the equalizer.
Amanda Scott, the heroine from Friday's semifinal, almost replicated her late-game heroics, but her 87th minute blast from the top was pushed out by CNU goalie Haley Eiser for a corner kick. Herm again had a shot a minute later, but it was off target and the Captains played keep away to run out the clock.
CNU had a 17-5 shot advantage while UC Santa Cruz had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Diaz-Tucker finished with 5 saves to become the 8th goalie in school history with 100 saves.
Scott, Herm, and
Angela Bradbury were all named to the C2C All-Tournament team.
