CLAREMONT - A goal early in the second half gave hosts Claremont-Mudd-Scripps a scrappy 1-0 win over UC Santa Cruz Saturday afternoon.
The Banana Slugs fell to 6-8-2 on the season. CMS went to 8-3-3 after having a 9-5 shot advantage.
The game started on even terms with both defenses playing well. With under 45 seconds left in the first half,
Chella Grattet had the visitors' best chance. She took
 a left-footed shot that went straight to the Athenas' goalie who covered it to see out the half.
The second half saw the defense turned up, and UC Santa Cruz allowed only two shots by the hosts in the last 45. However, the last one was the game -winner asÂ
The teams traded possession the rest of the game with no clear chances, giving the Athenas their second 1-0 escape over UC Santa Cruz this year.
Alyssa Diaz-Tucker had 4 saves for the Banana Slugs, putting her in eighth place all-time in career saves at UCSC.
