UC Santa Cruz grabbed an early lead against Division II member Fresno Pacific, but the visitors rallied with a goal in the second half and then in the second overtime to send the Banana Slugs to a 2-1 loss.
UC Santa Cruz drops to 3-8-2 on the year with their first overtime loss of the year.
The Banana Slugs outshot their highly regarded opponents 14-2 in the first half. The finest shot was
Kailas Dhond's fast-break goal in the 24th minute, when he got on the end of a
Max Beldner pass over the entire Sunbirds' defense and lifted a rainbow over the onrushing FPU goalkeeper into an empty net. UC Santa Cruz almost doubled their advantage 2:23 before halftime, but
Derek Uemura had his breakaway saved to keep the Sunbirds in it.
The Sunbirds subbed in nine new players for the second half and kept the UCSC defense busy. They almost tied it in the 77th minute, but Marley Edwards had his half-volley saved by
Arman Salimi who was standing just three yards away near the top of the box. Fresno Pacific finally got lucky with under five minutes to play when Edwards pounced on a scramble near the penalty arc and shot it low for the equalizer.
After an even first overtime, Fresno Pacific ended the game with 5:38 left to send the home crowd home unhappy.
UCSC finished with a 21-13 shot advantage overall, and had an 8-6 edge in corners.
The Banana Slugs are not in action until next week, when they open a three-game road trip on Wednesday the 20th at La Verne.
