Box Score 2 THOUSAND OAKS (1-18) - The eighth-ranked UC Santa Cruz men's volleyball team split their two matches at the Cal Lutheran Invitational on Saturday. In the morning, they couldn't maintain a quick start in a loss to Vassar, and in the afternoon they dismantled a Fontbonne team.
UCSC vs. Vassar
UC Santa Cruz dropped the first match 3-1 to Vassar (25-17, 27-29, 20-25, 14-25). The Banana Slugs started hot, hitting .217 to win the first set, but hit just .000 the rest of the way dropping the final three sets. Vassar outblocked the Banana Slugs in the match 20-9, with three in a row to take a wild second set that swung momentum to the Brewers. Ian Pizzuti and Aaron Fox each had 7 kills to lead UCSC, while Sam Wittert had 26 assists to become the seventh man in program history with over 1,000 assists.
UCSC VS. Fontbonne
Against Fontbonne, UCSC came out with fiery hitting and never let up, hitting .310, .593, and .385 in each set in a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-18, 25-14). The overall .427 hitting percentage was a season-high.
Rowdy Lennon had team-highs of 12 kills and 7 digs, while Fox added 10 kills.
UCSC (5-3) finishes their weekend playing New York University Sunday morning at 11am.
