Box Score BOSTON - UC Santa Cruz needed just over an hour to sweep 13th-ranked Wentworth 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-16) on Friday.
The Banana Slugs (20-6) reached twenty wins for the first time since the 2015 NCAA Tournament team. UCSC outhit Wentworth (13-6) .410 to .143.
As UCSC struggled early with their serving, he first set was close throughout but the Slugs took the lead for good at 9-8 on Kyle Donohoe's massive spike on an overpass in the midst of a 6-1 run. UCSC finished hitting .438 in the set.
There were eight ties early on but UCSC finished on a 10-5 run to claim set two and go up 2-0.
The momentum carried over to the third set where UCSC opened a 13-7 lead on the hosts. Ollie Oshman served a pair of aces to get the Leopards within 18-15 however, forcing a UCSC time out. The Slugs found their composure and finished the match on a 7-1 run to break a two-game losing streak.
Donohoe led UCSC with 12 kills and a season-high .524 hitting percentage. Ryan Manley had 11 kills and 3 of the Slugs' six aces. Lake Merchen had 10 kills and 10 digs, along with a pair of aces to give him 100 for his career.
UCSC continues their Northeast roadtrip Saturday with a pair of games at Vassar College.
