Banana Slugs power past Poets

SANTA CRUZ - The UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs won their first dual meet in a 9-0 sweep of visiting Whittier on a sunny Saturday morning.

It was the first dual meet against a Division III opponent and the Slugs played their best top-to-bottom tennis of the year.

Claire Stoner and Nora Rothe both won their second straight matches at #4 and #5 singles respectively. Stoner got by Karissa Lee 6-2, 6-0 while Rothe shutout Esther Choe 6-0, 6-0.

Vera Smekalina and Zoë Brook won at #2 and #3 singles, losing just a combined four points. In the final match to finish, Sylvia Brummitt won a thriller at #1 singles. After dropping the first set, she raced to a 6-1 win in the second before winning the tiebreaker set 10-7 over Amanda Rodriguez to complete the sweep.

The Slugs took the #3 doubles and #6 singles by default.

UC Santa Cruz next play in three weeks with a trip to Oregon.
