Loggers Hand Banana Slugs Fourth Consecutive Loss

TACOMA, WA -- University of Puget Sound would score forty in the second half as the Loggers won 65-52 in Tacoma. The game was the first game on the road for the Banana Slugs of the 2014-2015 season. 

UC Santa Cruz was coming off a 72-49 loss to Whitman College on last Sunday in Santa Cruz. The Loggers were off a 63-52 win over California Lutheran University in Honolulu on last Saturday. 

UC Santa Cruz would start the game out fast and would gain a 14-9 lead, their largest of the game, on a Jared Ponce three pointer with 13:57 left in the half. The Loggers would then go on a 12-0 run, capped by two Keith Shattuck free throws, to make the score 21-14 with 9:38 left in the half. The Slugs would respond with a 7-0 run, capped by a James Townsend free throw, to tie the game at 21-21 with 4:20 left in the half. The Loggers would outscore the Banana Slugs 4-2 over the remainder of the half to take a 25-23 lead into the halftime break. 

In the second half, the Loggers would extend their lead. The Loggers would take a nine point lead at 40-31, with 14:51 left in the game, on a Kohl Meyer three pointer with 14:51 left. The Slugs would trim the Loggers lead to two on two occasions, the second coming at 46-44 with 10:17 left on a Corey Cilia layup. The Loggers would extend their lead to double digits, at 60-50, with 1:52 left on a Matt Reid free throw and would take their largest lead of the game at 65-50 with twenty nine seconds on a Shattuck three pointer. The Banana Slugs would add two Tre Weston free throws as the Loggers won 65-52. 

Jared Ponce had ten points for the Banana Slugs. Shattuck had a game high fifteen points for the Loggers. Adam Marlow had seven points, off the bench, for the Banana Slugs in the loss. Erin Barber had fourteen points for the Loggers. 

The Banana Slugs shot 29.8% (14-47) from the field, 37.5% (9-24) from the three point line and was 62.5% (15-24) from the free throw line. The Loggers shot 41.5% (22-53) from the field, 41.2% (7-17) from the three point line and 58.3% (14-24) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced eight Logger turnovers scoring seven points off the turnovers while the Loggers' defense forced thirteen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring fourteen points off the turnovers. Whitman outrebounded UC Santa Cruz 41-39 but the Banana Slugs had eight more points off the bench (25-17) than did the Loggers. 

The next game for the Banana Slugs will be Sunday as they take on Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. Tipoff is set for 2 pm.
