That's no typo.

UCSC beat Simpson by 92 points in a men's basketball game Saturday night.

"We just played pretty good and they just couldn't generate anything offensively," said UCSC Coach Duane Garner. Master of the obvious, that Garner.

"If you see the score, you might think we trying to run it up," Garner explained. "It was just one of those games." Garner began substituting 3 1/2 minutes into the game, called off the press after 5 minutes.

"You just want to get the starters nice and loose and warmed up," he said and didn't play any of his 16 players more than 20 minutes. By halftime, UCSC led 66-33. "A lot of times when you have a game like this, defense is the thing you focus on," Garner said. "Most of the stuff on offense is going to work, so you want to get them going on the defensive end."

Anthony Yanatta led the Banana Slugs with 26 points, including six 3-pointers. Ernie Bray scored 21 points with five 3-pointers, and Jason Leiner had 19. Allen Jones and Darren Shearer were also in double figures, with 13 and 10 points, respectively. UCSC has 16 players on its roster. All 16 played and 15 scored. "We did shoot well, that's one thing," Garner said. "Everybody that played shot well, and not just layups, either." UCSC made 13 3-point field goals. Simpson was without its top player, senior Steve Turner. "That hurt them," Garner said. "He usually scores about 30 against us."

On top of that, it didn't help Simpson that UCSC had a significant height advantage. "We were way bigger," Garner said, noting that Simpson had one player at 6 feet, 6 inches and the rest around 6 feet.

UCSC is 7-5 for the season.
