Bryan Shires was a key member of the UC Santa Cruz men's volleyball program and was named the 2008 NCAA Division III National Player of the Year, the only Banana Slugs in program history to earn this award. In addition to his Player of the Year accolades, Shires earned First Team All-American honors in 2008 along with Second Team All-American honors in 2007. Shires served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during his time with UC Santa Cruz. During his 2008 campaign, the Banana Slugs earned a third place finish at the Molten DIII Championships.
