Slugs Drop No. 33 Vassar, Defeat ARC in Saturday Doubleheader

SANTA CRUZ, Ca. - The UC Santa Cruz women's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the No. 33 Vassar College Brewers on Saturday morning. After being swept in the doubles, the Slugs went on to win all but two of the singles matches, giving them just enough to eke out the win. The Slugs will be staying home for the foreseeable future as next week the Slugs will continue the home stand against Colorado College on Friday March 21st. UC Santa Cruz also earned a convincing 7-0 victory over American River College on Saturday afternoon to go 2-0 on the day.
 
UC Santa Cruz 4, Vassar 3
The contest started scary for the Slugs, who were swept in the doubles 6-1, 6-0, 6-2. This did not deter the Slugs though as they dominated in the Singles. No. 1 Sara Beckman led the charge with a convincing win 6-4, 6-0. No. 3 Meghana Damojipurapu dropped her first set 6-3 but came fighting back with two crucial wins (6-3, 6-2), later clinching the match for UC Santa Cruz. No. 4 Chloe Wu had a commanding win over her competition where she won 6-1, 6-4. No. 5 Melody Ghaffari took her match 6-3, 6-2, helping the Slugs complete the 4-3 victory over the Brewers.
 
UC Santa Cruz 7, American River College 0
No.1 Doubles was the closest of the bunch as Sara Beckman and Natalie Sprenger took down their competition in a close 7-6 win. No. 2 Doubles was a bit less intense with Chloe Wu and Meghana Damojipurapu taking their match 6-3. No. 3 Sweden Van Houten and Melody Ghaffari cruised to the last doubles win 6-3. No. 1 Singles was a close one after Sara Beckman split the first two sets 7-6 and 7-5. However, she was able to finish the job with an 11-7 set 3 win. The rest of the singles matches were an absolute clinic as No. 2 Adeline Lai won 6-1, 6-2, No. 3 Melody Ghaffari swept 6-0, 6-0, No. 4 Julia Chiaradia Azzi won 6-3, 6-0, No. 5 Sweden Van Houten won 6-0, 6-4, and No. 6 Daniela Christain completed the sweep 6-2, 6-0.
