Slugs Show Well at Portland Indoor Meet

PORTLAND, OR. – The UC Santa Cruz men's and women's track and field teams performed well at the University of Portland Indoor Meet #2 on Sunday afternoon. The Banana Slugs will be back in action on Feb. 22 and Feb. 23 in Newport News, Virginia for the Coast-2-Coast Indoor Conference Championship.
 
Women's Meet Highlights
  • 200m: Amaya Cummins led the way for UCSC in the 200m, running a 26.96s to take second overall.
  • 800m: Evelyn Ruckmann-Barnes took second with a time of 2:27.69 while Hanna Hekkanen (2:30.43), Elena Stanciu (2:30.51), and Frieda Cedillo (2:30.97) all ran well to take fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
  • 400m: Caitlin Donovan was the top performer for UCSC in the event, crossing the line in 1:00.65 to take second while Mae Stafford took fourth in 1:01.51.
  • Mile: The Slugs had a strong showing in the mile as Hanna Hekkanen and Elena Stanciu both turned in personal best times with Hekkanen running 5:02.08 (No. 39 in DIII) with Stanciu closely behind in 5:04.36 (No. 52 in DIII).
  • 4 x 400m Relay: The Slugs relay team of Donovan, Cummins, Stafford, and Ruckmann-Barnes combined for a time of 4:19.76 to take first by just over half a second.
 
Men's Meet Highlights
  • 800m: Aaron Hillberg took third overall with a time of 1:56.87 with Viktor Kieturakis and Marcus Fehlman also finishing in the top 10 with times of 2:00.93 and 2:01.40.
  • 400m: The Slugs had a great showing in the 400m, taking first through fourth with Levi Laden running the 34th best time in the NCAA this season after crossing the line in 48.80s for a new personal best. Evan Hoftstetter also dropped a sub-50 second race in 49.23s to take second while Nathan Bruhn and Shiven Karnick took third and fourth in 51.38s and 51.65s.
  • Mile: Graeme Maclean took third overall with a time of 4:17.16 while Camden Jaureguy took 11th with a personal best time of 4:24.97.
  • 4 x 400m Relay: The Slugs relay team of Bruhn, Hofstetter, Karnick, and Laden took first overall with a time of 3:41.03.
