Slugs Celebrate Senior Day with Strong Performances Against FPU and CSUEB

SANTA CRUZ, Ca. – The UC Santa Cruz men's and women's swim and dive teams showed well on senior day as they hosted FPU and CSU East Bay on Saturday afternoon. The Banana Slugs will stay in Santa Cruz for their next home meet with a dual against Simpson University on January 17th at 3:00 p.m.
 
Women's Meet Highlights
  • 200 Medley Relay: The UCSC B team of Medha Raghuraman, Lily Wolfinger, Kirsten Boyle, and Keaton Canaday combined for a time of 1:48.58 to take third.
  • 1000 Free: Honour Dufresne and Piper Strickler took second and third as the duo touched the wall in 10:47.84 and 10:52.02.
  • 200 Free: Katy Hawk earned the victory in the 200 free with a time of 1:54.12.
  • 100 Back: Raghuraman took fourth with a time of 59.15 seconds.
  • 100 Breast: Wolfinger swam to a second place finish with a time of 1:07.50.
  • 200 Fly: Kirsten Boyle touched the wall in 2:10.26 to finish in third overall.
  • 50 Free: Terezea Shea was the top finisher for the Slugs, earning a third place finish in 24.45s.
  • 100 Free: Shea and Hawk took second and third in the event, touching the wall in 53.15s and 53.21s.
  • 200 Back: Maddy Gruender took second with a time of 2:07.14.
  • 200 Breast: Kirsten Boyle took third after swimming a 2:23.82.
  • 500 Free: Honour Defresne swam to a fourth place finish with a time of 5:18.15.
  • 100 Fly: Boyle swam a 58.13s in the event, good for fifth place overall.
  • 400 IM: Lily Wolfinger took second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:44.24.
  • 400 Free Relay: The UCSC A team of Shea, Hawk, Gruender, and Canaday combined for a time of 3:32.58 to take second place.
  • 3m Dive: Briseis Valenzuela took first with a score of 201.15 points.
 
Men's Meet Highlights
  • 200 Medley Relay: The UCSC A team of Asher Kates, Karsten Hsiao, Andrew Koika, and Kyle Reitan took first with a time of 1:33.59.
  • 1000 Free: Micahel Fusinati won the event with a 9:44.79 with Sam Kaplan taking third after touching the wall in 10:13.37.
  • 200 Free: Bryson Schmid took second with a time of 1:42.74.
  • 100 Back: Asher Kates and Teo Truong took first and third as the duo touched the wall in 51.49s and 52.47s, respectively.
  • 100 Breast: Karsten Hsiao won the 100 breast as one of two swimmers going sub 59s, touching the wall in 58.43s.
  • 200 Fly: Kent Nishida was the standout in the event, winning in 1:52.63 with Jude Robinson taking third in 1:53.45.
  • 50 Free: Kyle Reitan took first overall in 20.58s while Charlie Hussain took second after touching the wall in 21.01s.
  • 100 Free: Bryson Schmid took second with a time of 46.19s.
  • 200 Back: The Banana Slugs swept the 200 back with the trio of Asher Kates, Luke Scanlon, and Teo Truong earning the top three spots with times of 1:52.70, 1:55.26, and 1:56.46.
  • 200 Breast: Karsten Hsiao took first with a time of 2:09.16.
  • 500 Free: Michael Fusinati was the top finisher, winning by nearly four seconds with a 4:43.80 while Massimo Reyna took third in 4:49.67.
  • 100 Fly: The Slugs earned another sweep as Morgan Madril, Jude Robinson, and Bryson Schmid earned the top three spots with the trio touching the wall in 50.51s, 50.91s, and 51.04s.
  • 400 IM: JJ Stoen and Luke Scanlon took first and second in the 400 IM with times of 4:11.47 and 4:12.27.
  • 400 Free Relay: The UCSC A team of Reitan, Koika, Schmid, and Adam Sinclair took second with a time of 3:05.02.
  • 1m Dive: Trevor Masters won the event after scoring 176.93 points while Ben Thiem and Charlie Shortt took second and third with 162.68 and 139.88.
