Swim and Dive Performs Well in Friday Dual with Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Ca. – The UC Santa Cruz men's and women's swim and dive teams showed well in their Friday night dual with NCAA Division I Cal Poly on the road. On the men's side, the Banana Slugs turned in 63 points to the Mustangs' 235 while the women scored 79 with Cal Poly scoring 218 on the day. UCSC will get just a night to rest as they turn around and host Fresno Pacific and CSU East Bay in a 12pm senior day double dual at the East Field House Pool.
 
Women's Meet Highlights
  • 400 Medley Relay: The UCSC B Team of Medha Raghuraman, Gretta Bellin, Fiona Lei, and Keaton Canaday combined for a time of 4:02.56 to take second overall.
  • 1000 Free: Piper Strickler turned in a 10:56.35 to take second.
  • 200 Free: Maddy Gruender won the event with a time of 1:58.91.
  • 100 Back: Kirsten Boyle took second overall after a 1:00.42 performance.
  • 100 Free: Katy Hawk won the 100 free after turning in the only sub 54 second time of the day, touching the wall in 53.82 seconds. Tereza Shea, Gruender, and Boyle took second through fourth behind Hawk, touching the wall in 54.95s, 54.98s, and 55.20s, respectively.
  • 200 Back: Paiten Tobey took fourth with a time of 2:15.70.
  • 500 Free: Strickler and Hannah Love took third and fourth in the event with a time of 5:25.01 and 5:25.67.
  • 100 Fly: Fiona Lei led the Slugs in the event with a time of 1:01.53 to take third while Raghuraman finished just behind in fourth with a time of 1:01.61.
  • 200 IM: Kirsten Boyle took third overall with a time of 2:14.56.
  • 200 Free Relay: The UCSC A team of Shea, Hawk, Gruender, and Canaday combined for a time of 1:39.16 to take second place.
  • 1m Dive: Briseis Valenzuela scored 180.90 points to take fifth place.
  • 3m Dive: Valenzuela turned in 203.33 points to take fifth place in the event.
 
Men's Meet Highlights
  • 400 Medley Relay: The UCSC B team of Brandon Le, Connor Bruton, Andrew Koika, and Bryson Schmid took third with a time of 3:32.33.
  • 1000 Free: Massimo Reyna took second overall with a time of 9:51.89.
  • 200 Free: Kent Nishida took fifth overall with a time of 1:46.45.
  • 100 Back: Teo Truong took fifth with a time of 54.06s.
  • 100 Breast: Karsten Hsiao took fourth after touching the wall in 1:00.57.
  • 50 Free: Bryson Schmid took sixth with a time of 21.67s.
  • 100 Free: Kyle Reitan swam a 47.02s to take fourth overall.
  • 200 Back: Teo Truong took fourth overall with a time of 2:00.27.
  • 200 Breast: Karsten Hsiao took third overall after touching the wall in 2:11.79.
  • 500 Free: Sam Caplan was one of three swimmers go sub five minutes, touching the wall in 4:55.28 to take third.
  • 200 IM: Teo Truong took third with a time of 2:03.19 while Morgan Madril took fourth in 2:05.18.
  • 200 Free Relay: The UCSC A team of Reitan, Koika, Charlie Hussain, and Adam Sinclair combined for a time of 1:26.10 to take third overall.
  • 1m Dive: Charlie Shortt and Trevor Masters took third and fourth in the event, scoring 163.80 and 141.53.
  • 3m Dive:  The duo of Shortt and Masters took third and fourth, scoring 178.20 and 154.35.
