Banana Slugs Show Well on Day 1 of Slug Shootout

SANTA CRUZ, Ca. – The UC Santa Cruz men's and women's swim and dive team showed well on day one of the 2024 Slug Shootout in their home pool on Friday afternoon. The Banana Slugs hosted student-athletes from Cal State East Bay, Azusa Pacific, Fresno Pacific, Southwestern Oregon, the College of Idaho, and The Master's University.
 
Women's Swim and Dive Highlights
  • 400 Medley Relay: Maddy Gruender, Lily Wolfinger, Kirsten Boyle, and Katy Hawk combined for a time of 4:03.09 to take third overall.
  • 1000 Freestyle: Piper Stickler lowered their time in the event from last weekend, dropping over 1.5 seconds for a time of 11:08.08 to take fourth.
  • 100 Breast: Lily Wolfinger took third overall, dropping 0.57 seconds off her seed time to finish in 1:08.63.
  • 50 Free: The trio of Katy Hawk, Keaton Canaday, and Phoebe Jaggers all dropped time from their seed times, finishing in 25.04s, 25.05s, and 25.07s, respectively to take sixth through eighth with Tereza Shea also swimming well, touching the wall in 25.30 seconds to take ninth.
  • 1m Dive: Briseis Valenzuela took second place with 217.10 points.
  • 400 IM: Lily Wolfinger led the way for the Slugs with a fifth place performance, touching the wall in 4:43.09 while Honour Dufresne took sixth in 4:51.75.
  • 200 Free Relay: Phoebe Jaggers, Tereza Shea, Maddy Gruender, and Keaton Canaday combined for a time of 1:39.17 to take third place.
