Argonauts Defeat Banana Slugs

BELMONT (9-15) – UC Santa Cruz had forty nine kills and had over a .150 hitting percentage as they took on NCAA Division II member Notre Dame De Namur University. However, the Argonauts would win the match 3-1.  

Both teams lost their last match. The Banana Slugs were swept 3-0 by Whittier College on Saturday in Thousand Oaks while the Argonauts lost 3-2 to Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Oregon on Saturday. 

In the first set, the two teams played back and forth volleyball for the first twelve serves. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the set at three, at 10-7, on a Jackie Koenig kill. The Argonauts would take the lead for good in the set with a 10-6 run, capped by a Dominique Tarrant kill, to make the score 17-16. The Argonauts would stretch their lead out to three, at 20-17, on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Banana Slugs would tie the set at 21-21 on a service ace. However, the Argonauts would outscore the Banana Slugs 4-2 for a 25-23 set one win and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, the Banana Slugs started with a 5-1 run, capped by a service ace. The Slugs would never relinquish their lead and would expand their lead to double digits, at ten, their largest of the set, on two occasions; the second occasion at 21-11 on an Argonauts' attack error.  The Argonauts would close the lead to seven on three occasions; the third occasion coming at 24-17 on a Tarrant kill. Madison Waddell of the Banana Slugs would score a kill on the next serve to give the Banana Slugs the 25-17 win and tied the match at 1-1.

The third set started with both teams trading points through the first eight serves. The Banana Slugs would take the lead and would expand their lead to five, their largest of the set, on six occasions; the sixth coming at 20-15 on an Argonauts' service error. The Argonauts would finish the set with a 10-2 set ending run, capped by a Bianca Alvarez kill, to win the set 25-22 and took a 2-1 lead in the match. 

The fourth set had both teams trade points for the first six serves. The Argonauts would take the lead at 5-4 on a Banana Slugs' service error. The Argonauts would expand their lead to six, their largest of the set, at 18-12 on a Banana Slugs' attack error. The Banana Slugs would trim the Argonauts' lead to one, at 21-20, on a Kallan Bedard kill. The Argonauts, however, would score the next four points to win the fourth set 25-20 and won the match.

For UC Santa Cruz, Bedard had twenty kills and for Notre Dame De Namur, Alvarez had a match high twenty three kills. Sophie Seiberth had forty-four assists for UC Santa Cruz and Maggie Billingsley had a match high forty-eight for Notre Dame De Namur. Alison Ota led the Banana Slugs with a match high twenty-one digs and Tarrant had nineteen digs for the Argonauts.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .183 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .375 while Notre Dame De Namur had a .226 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .268. The Argonauts had ten more digs (83-73) than did the Banana Slugs.

The Banana Slugs will play their next match on Friday as they take on NAIA member Pacific Union College in Angwin. The first serve is set for 3 pm.
